약이 되는 식물 (2003) 지구상에 서식하고 있는 식물 가운데 아직도 그 생태와 성질이 밝혀지지 않은 식물이 수천 수만종에 이릅니다. 현재 찾아낸 성분들도 일부분에 지나지 않고, 알려지지 않은 식물들 중에 현대의학으로 해결할 수 없는 난치병의 치료제가 숨어 있을지도 모를 일입니다. 그래서 세계는 지금 생물종을 확보하려는 치열한 전쟁의 한가운데 놓여 있습니다. 선진국들은 이미 전세계를 돌며 무차별적인 식물종 사냥을 벌여 왔습니다. 그 중에서도 우리나라는 가장 좋은 사냥터였습니다. 우리 자생식물들은 어떤 환경에서도 굳게 뿌리를 내리는 강인한 생명력을 자랑하기 때문입니다. 우리가 무심코 밟고 지나가는 이름 모르는 풀들 중에 미래에 엄청난 부가가치를 창출할 보물이 숨어 있기 때문입니다. 바이오테크놀로지(Biotechnology) 발달은 전통적인 농업의 영억에서만 머물던 생물종의 활용도를 생활용품과 의약품의 개발에까지 영역을 넓혀 놓았습니다. 따라서 생물자원의 확보는 새로운 국부창출의 한 방법으로 떠오르고 있는 것입니다. 이번 아홉번째 사진집에서는 동양의학의 신비를 담은 약초의 중요성을 알리기 위해 30가지의 약초를 주제로 꾸며 보았습니다. Medicinal Plants (2003) Only a fraction of the entire plant species on the earth is known to humans for its ecology and characteristics. There may well be key medicinal plants to treat incurable diseases amongst the unknown species. Currently, we are in a battle for obtaining biological species. Many developed countries have been aware of the importance of biological resources and have been obtaining biological resources from many less developed countries. Korea is full of yet unknown biological resources. The weed that you pass by may be the next medicine that earns a fortune in the future. The development in biotechnology includes research on plant species that were limited to agricultural resources for their potential uses in everyday products and medicines. Developing a biological species into a marketable product is one way to enrich a nation. To help publicize the plant species that have been used in oriental medicines, I collected photographs of about 30 medicinal plants in this Calendar.
